Virology & Antiviral Research

The ADVS department has a group of virologists who focus their research on human and animal viral diseases. Their work includes elucidating mechanisms of replication and pathogenesis of viruses of public health, agricultural, and national security concern, and modeling infection and disease in cell culture, organoid, and in vivo model systems. Dr. Young-Min Lee and his laboratory employ innovative molecular and biochemical techniques to address key questions in viral replication to identify areas for antiviral intervention. The Institute for Antiviral Research (IAR) comprises four research-track professors (Drs. Gowen, Julander, Tarbet, and Hurst) and approximately 40 research and support staff. The IAR employs a variety of model systems to identify and develop antivirals and vaccines to treat and prevent a multitude of viral infections and their associated diseases. Collaboration with the Biotechnology, Epigenetics, & Stem Cell Research group has led to the establishment of novel model systems for viral diseases using genetically modified rodent species. The Utah Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratory, including Dr. Arnaud Van Wettere, provides expertise in characterizing viral pathogenesis and disease.
