Obtain your FAA medical certificate
- A current FAA Class Medical is a prerequisite for flight training. Students must send a copy of their medical to their academic advisor before they can register for flight courses.
- You can search for Aviation Medical Examiners (AME).
- We recommend getting a first class medical (most jobs require first class), but you only need a third class medical to be a student pilot.
- Bring your medical certificate with you to USU. You must have it in your possession on every flight that you take.
Obtain your student pilot license
- To obtain your student pilot’s license, you must fill out an IACRA form on the FAA’s website.
- Create an account and fill out all the information you can. You can do this without an instructor. Make sure you keep your FTN number handy. This is what the flight instructor will use to pull up and complete your form.
- You will need a flight instructor to finalize and submit your IACRA application to the FAA. This can be done the first week of classes when you meet your new flight instructor.
Provide TSA documents to airport student services during first week of school
U.S. citizens will need:
- A current U.S. passport OR
- A current driver’s license AND original birth certificate OR original certificate of naturalization
International students will need:
- Passport AND F-1 Visa AND I-20 issued by Utah State University AND TSA approval*
- *Obtain TSA approval using these instructions and completing your FTSP Application on Flight Training Security Program (FTSP).
Permanent Resident students will need:
- Passport AND Permanent Resident Card (green card)* AND TSA approval through FTSP (see above)
Required Materials/Supplies and Financial Responsibility
In addition to materials required by the specific flight course, all flight students must have and use the following:
- Current charts and publications
- Navigation tools, logbook, and headset
- Compatible device to work as an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) (see Device Requirements)

- Checklists and Airplane Flight Manual (AFM/POH)
- Approved USU Aviation uniform (see p.2 on Flight Training Syllabus)
Flight Course Fees & Financial Responsibility
- Flight course fees are estimates based on FAA minimums and student averages. Students are responsible for all training costs, including any additional flight or ground instruction required beyond the published estimate. Failure to maintain sufficient funds may result in temporary pause of flight privileges or being charged a “No-Show” fee. Tuition, fees, and refunds are governed by the University’s published refund policy
