Laboratory Safety Protocol
Hazards at NAMC
- Glass
- Ethanol
Safety Instructions
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as closed toed shoes.
- Ethanol should only be used in a well-ventilated area, as it is flammable and can produce harmful vapors. Avoid using ethanol near open flames or heat sources.
- Use glass vials that are designed to withstand the pressure and temperature of the experiment. Check vials for cracks or chips before use. If a vial is chipped or cracked, dispose of it properly.
- Label all vials containing ethanol with the appropriate hazard warning symbols and information.
- Avoid overfilling vials with ethanol, as this can increase the risk of spills or leaks.
- If a spill occurs, immediately clean up the area with absorbent materials and dispose of the waste in accordance with local regulations. If ethanol comes into contact with eyes, use the eye wash station in lab and rinse eyes for 10 minutes.
- Keep ethanol and glass vials out of reach of children and unauthorized personnel.
- If a glass vial falls and shatters, use a dustpan and broom to clean up the broken glass and dispose of the glass properly.
- Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for ethanol for more detailed information on its hazards, safe handling, and storage. The SDS for ethanol can be found on the website of the manufacturer or supplier of the chemical.
SDS for Ethanol
The SDS for ethanol can vary based on the supplier, but a typical SDS will include information such as the chemical's properties, hazards, safe handling, storage, and disposal
instructions.
