United States Forest Service (USFS) - Biological Science Technician - 2 Positions


Locations:
Lucky Peak Nursery, Boise, ID

This position is established to perform nursery production duties including seedling maintenance, irrigation, seed processing, and general site maintenance. 


Major Duties:
• Assisting with seedling crop maintenance. This includes irrigation, weeding, thinning, inventory, and monitoring.
• Seedling crops will be bareroot production or containerized (in a greenhouse setting and outside)
• Assisting with seed extraction and processing. Utilizing hand cleaning as well as specialized seed cleaning equipment.  
• General site grounds maintenance and upkeep, utilizing equipment such as lawn mower, weed trimmer, and hand tools. 
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
• Applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduate students at USU’s Quinney College of Natural Resources (QCNR).
• A valid driver's license is required.
• Successful applicants will be expected to conduct outdoor work in variable weather conditions and terrain for extended periods of time, plus risks found in a typical office setting. There will be walking, hiking, standing, bending, carrying light items and occasional lifting of items that weigh up to 50 pounds.
• This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position, which may involve irregular hours, including evenings and some work on weekends.

Salary: $17 an hour, 40 hours a week for 12 weeks. Potential overtime opportunities. 

Location: These positions will be at the Lucky Peak Nursery in Boise, ID. Housing will be provided at the Idaho City Ranger District in Idaho City, ID. A government vehicle may be available for commuting to and from the nursery.

Closing Date: June 15, 2026, and open until positions are filled. 

Employment Dates: Flexible; not to exceed 12 weeks between mid-May and the end of August, 2026. Appointments under 12 weeks are available.

Credits/Honors: Successful applicants are required to enroll for 1 credit each in NR 4151 (in the Spring 2025 2nd 7-week session) and NR 4152 (in the Fall 1st 7-week session). Successful applicants may also enroll for up to 3 summer credit hours during the internship; Honors Program participants may enroll for points. Individuals would work with a USU advisor to develop and complete an academic assignment during the internship.
