United States Forest Service (USFS) - Forestry Technician - 4 Positions

Locations: Idaho City Ranger District and Emmett Ranger District

This position is established to perform presale duties including timber marking, following a map and compass or GPS, and basic tree measurements.

Major Duties

  • assisting with timber sale layout and development
  • conducting regeneration monitoring
  • supporting Timber Stand Improvement (TSI) projects
  • General forestry tasks such as vegetation surveys, data collection, etc
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at USU’s Quinney College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (QANR).
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Successful applicants will be expected to conduct outdoor work in variable weather conditions and terrain for extended periods of time, plus risks found in a typical office setting. There will be walking, hiking, standing, bending, carrying light items and occasional lifting of items that weigh up to 50 pounds.
  • This position is up to 40 hours per week, which may involve irregular hours, including evenings and some work on weekends. Hours per week vary due to weather, holidays and other time off.

Salary: $17 an hour, 40 hours a week for 12 weeks

Location:These positions will be in Idaho City, ID and Emmett, ID. Housing will be provided, and overnight stay may vary depending on location of work site. Housing locations will be in Idaho City itself, or High Valley, ID for the Emmett Ranger District.

Number of Openings: 4

Credits/Honors: Successful applicants are required to enroll for 1 credit each in NR 4151 (in the Spring 2026 2nd 7-week session) and NR 4152 (in the Fall 1st 7-week session). Successful applicants may also enroll for up to 3 summer credit hours during the internship; Honors Program participants may enroll for points. Individuals would work with a USU advisor to develop and complete an academic assignment during the internship.

Housing:Provided: Housing available at Idaho City, ID and High Valley, ID. At times, location of overnight stay may vary depending on location of the work site.

Closing Date: March 1st, 2026 and open until all positions are filled.

Employement Dates: Flexible; not to exceed 12 weeks between mid-May and the end of August, 2026.
