Uinta Wasatch Cache National Forest (USFS) - Recreation Intern - 12 Positions

 

The Recreation Intern will work as part of the various recreation crews, supporting a variety of field and project based activities across different locations.

Evanston-Mountain View Fee Personnel (2 positions):
  • Position description: This position on the Evanston-Mountain View Ranger District will focus on work primarily within the fee area of the District along the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway.  Duties will include work at the Bear River Guard Station visitor center providing basic customer service and possibly some maintenance duties at the station. Monitoring of fee area sites, contact with the public and facility maintenance including janitorial duties will be aspects of the position.
  • Development Skills/Training: FS required trainings (defensive driving, bloodborne pathogens, etc.), communication skills, customer service, map reading, visitor center work.
  • Work Schedule: Friday-Monday (10 hour days) 0700-1730
South Zone Dispersed Recreation Personnel (1 position):
  • Position description:  This position on the Spanish Fork Ranger District will heavily support the Dispersed Recreation Program but will also include other recreation-specific duties on the District, giving these interns a wide array of tangible skills and hands-on experience. Work includes maintaining, closing, marking dispersed camping areas, roadways, projects in developed rec sites and working with volunteer groups. Interns will use a wide variety of hand and power tools. ATV/UTVs are used often to access areas.
  • Development Skills/Training: FS required trainings (defensive driving, bloodborne pathogens, etc.), trailering, UTV training, CPR/AED certification. Skills to be gained include working with a wide range of hand and power tools, working with volunteers, fence building, sign installation, working with user stay limits and FPO training if possible, map reading and driving trucks, trailers, and UTVs.
  • Work Schedule: Tuesday – Saturday; Monday – Fridays; alternating with some Sundays (8 hour days)
South Zone Recreation Special Uses Personnel (1 position):
  • Position description: Interns will spend much of their time in the forest, visiting recreation residence tracts and conducting onsite inspections of cabins to help ensure compliance and stewardship of these unique locations. They will also assist with drafting letters to cabin owners when issues are identified, and may support inspections for outfitters, guides, and recreation events. This is a great opportunity for interns who enjoy fieldwork, communication, and working closely with public land stewardship.
  • Development Skills/Training: FS required trainings (defensive driving, bloodborne pathogens, etc.) residence monitoring/inspections trainings, GIS skills
  • Work Schedule: Monday – Friday (5/4/9 or 4/10 schedule)
Heber-Kamas Trails Personnel (3 positions):
  • Position description:  This position on the Heber-Kamas Ranger District will heavily support the Trails/Wilderness Program but will also include other recreation-specific duties on the District, giving these interns a wide array of tangible skills and hands-on experience. Work includes maintaining and clearing out over 700 miles of non-motorized and motorized trails using chainsaws, crosscut saws, a wide variety of hand tools, and requires hiking in all weather conditions nearly every day. This work is very physically demanding, commonly taking place in remote areas and High Uintas Wilderness. ATV/UTVs are used often to clear all motorized trails. Large projects could include building bridges/structures, tread work, rock work, fence building and sign/kiosk installation.
  • Development Skills/Training: FS required trainings (defensive driving, bloodborne pathogens, etc.), trailering, UTV training, S-212 Wildland Fire Chain Saws training, CPR/AED certification, and crosscut saw training will be provided. Skills to be gained include working with a wide range of hand and power tools, trail maintenance and trail construction, working with volunteers, map reading and driving trucks, trailers, and UTVs.
  • Work Schedule: Tuesday – Friday (10 hour days)
Salt Lake Park Ranger/Park Ranger and Fees (2 positions):
  • Position description: The Salt Lake Ranger District provides recreation opportunities to a large urban population (over a million people live within a 30-minute drive)!  This exciting Park Ranger position requires flexibility and comfort with extremely high numbers of public contacts.  Weekend work is certain and shift hours may vary. A workday may occur at busy trailheads or visitor centers, hiking or biking popular trails, or supporting other Forest programs. Responsibilities include providing education and interpretation, coordinating with volunteers and partners, monitoring Recreation Fee areas, minor trail work, and supporting facility maintenance (janitorial duties). 
  • Development Skills/Training: FS required trainings (defensive driving, bloodborne pathogens, etc.), communication skills, education interpretation lessons/presentation, map reading, visitor center work
  • Work Schedule:  Friday – Monday (weekends) 10 hour days

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at USU’s Quinney College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (QANR).
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Successful applicants will be expected to conduct outdoor work in variable weather conditions and terrain for extended periods of time, plus risks found in a typical office setting. There will be walking, hiking, standing, bending, carrying light items and occasional lifting of items that weigh up to 50 pounds.
  • This position is up to 40 hours per week, which may involve irregular hours, including evenings and some work on weekends. Hours per week vary due to weather, holidays and other time off.

Salary: $18 an hour, 40 hours a week for 12 weeks

Closing Date: May 1st, 2026 and open until all positions are filled.

Employment Dates: Flexible; not to exceed 12 weeks between mid-May and the end of August, 2026

Credits/Honors: Successful applicants are required to enroll for 1 credit each in NR 4251 (in the Spring 2026 2nd 7-week session) and NR 4252 (in the Fall 1st 7-week session). Successful applicants may also enroll for up to 3 summer credit hours during the internship; Honors Program participants may enroll for points. Individuals would work with a USU advisor to develop and complete an academic assignment during the internship.
