Forestry

Forestry is the first conservation and planning profession in North America. Since the turn of the 20th century Foresters have been trained in the planning and management of forests. Forestry research spans many disciplines that all effect the sustainable management of forested ecosystems. From the policy associated with management of forests for carbon storage or to fix carbon in rapidly growing trees, to modeling the growth of tree and stands into the future, forestry research is crucial. Issues of forest health like invasive species, pest species, and the multitude of things that kill trees will only become more important to understand as environmental perturbations (development, climate change, etc.) on forests continues to grow. My research program encompasses many different facets of forestry from applied silviculture, and growth and yield modeling to issues of planning and management. The study of ecological processes and patterns that shape forests is also important in order to apply the best available science to current management.
