Current Research Projects

  • Studying how a policy innovation—water banks—changes the dynamics of virtual water trade in the U.S. West as a part of the solution to the intensifying water crisis.
  • Employing a modernized ecological footprint concept—human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP)—connecting it to water, carbon and nutrient footprints, connecting all these footprints to trade, and thereby mapping interdependent ecological teleconnections among US states and counties.  Upon what ecosystems are you dependent for your basic needs?  To whom are you displacing your footprints?

Human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP) harvested from each of the 48 conterminous states with allocation above and below ground, used and unused, and from specific crops, timber and grazing sources.
