Biography

I received my first B.S. degree in Biology from Chung-Ang University (Seoul, South Korea) in 1991 and my second B.S. degree in Microbiology from the University of Minnesota (St. Paul, MN) in 1993. I completed my Ph.D. training at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD) in 1998, followed by approximately two years of postdoctoral research at Washington University (St. Louis, MO). From 2000 to 2011, I served as a faculty member at Chungbuk National University Medical School (Cheongju, South Korea), where I was promoted to full professor in 2011. In 2012, I joined Utah State University as an Associate Professor in the Department of Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Sciences. I currently direct a molecular virology laboratory that investigates the molecular mechanisms of viral replication and pathogenesis in two clinically important human and animal pathogens: Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV, an orthoflavivirus) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV, a betaarterivirus), as well as their closely related medically important viruses.

Research Interests

As a molecular virologist, my laboratory investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying viral replication and pathogenesis. Understanding these processes is essential for developing new antiviral therapeutic and preventive strategies against two positive‑strand RNA viruses of major importance to human and animal health: Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV, an orthoflavivirus) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV, a betaarterivirus). Despite their clinical significance, the fundamental mechanisms governing the replication and pathogenesis of these viruses remain poorly understood. A major challenge stems from their single‑stranded, positive‑sense RNA genomes, which cannot be directly manipulated in vitro for functional studies of viral RNA elements and gene products. Over the past two decades, my laboratory has made several key contributions to overcoming these barriers. One of our most significant achievements is the construction of full‑length infectious cDNA clones for both JEV and PRRSV. These molecular clones enable precise genetic manipulation of the viral genome and the generation of molecularly defined recombinant viruses for mechanistic studies. By leveraging this infectious cDNA technology, together with innovative molecular, cellular, genetic, and biochemical approaches, we aim to address fundamental questions about the viral life cycle and host responses to infection. Ultimately, this work will help identify novel molecular targets for the development of antivirals and vaccines against JEV, PRRSV, and other closely related pathogens.
