Biography

My academic history includes a bachelors degree in rangeland resource management and a masters in rangeland ecology from Brigham Young University. I earned my doctorate at the University of Utah in Geography with an emphasis in remote sensing and geospatial science. I have spent my academic career at Utah State University focusing on land cover mapping and the analysis of landscape condition and trend across the Intermountain West. Over the past 40 years I have applied my specialty in desert, semi-desert, forested, wetland, agricultural, and urbanized landscapes.

Teaching Interests

My teaching focuses on the application of remote sensing to natural resource issues. My current and past courses include: Applied Remote Sensing, Introductory Geographic Information Science, Wildland Ecosystems, and Natural Resource Inventory and Analysis

Research Interests

Applying digital remote sensing data to ecosystem modeling and developing GIS databases to aid in resource management and research

            Biography

My background is in rangeland and landscape ecology with an emphasis in geospatial science and specifically remote sensing of natural and anthropogenic environments. I've applied my work in the Western U.S., Mexico, Egypt, Iceland, India, Namibia, Uzbekistan, and China, in semi-arid, forested, agricultural, and urbanized landscapes.

My teaching focuses on applications of remote sensing to natural ecosystems and my research addresses monitoring of landscapes to detect changes and trends in land condition.

I am the Director of the Remote Sensing and GIS Laboratory in the Department of Wildland Resources, College of Natural Resources.
