Biography

Dr. Janecke immigrated from Germany as a child and speaks almost fluent German. She discovered geology as a sophomore in college and has been excited to learn about earth processes and earth history ever since. She enjoys both her roles as researcher and teacher. Her spouse, Jim Evans, is also a professor in the USU Geology Department and they had two children. Karen died in 2013.
Dr Janecke is an expert in active strike-slip faults, including the San Andreas, San Jacinto and San Felipe fault zones, and also researches basins and extensional tectonics in the Basin and Range province. Janecke and Markowski (2013 through 2016) identified an important new strand of the San Andreas fault zone in the Salton Trough of California Valley for the first time. Together with Robert Q. Oaks, Jr. she worked out that the Bonneville flood may have been initiated by a paleo-earthquake along the newly identified Riverdale fault. She has been leading a group that is exploring the interactions among active faults, cinder cones, basalt flows, and the Bear River in Gem Valley, Southeast Idaho. After overrunning the channel of the paleo lower Bear River 3 times between 430 and 164 ka, a thick accumulation of basalt erupted into, and filled a graben along the East Gem Valley fault zone near Soda Point ~50-60 ka. Only then was the lower Bear River permanently defeated and shifted into its modern course southward through Gem Valley, Oneida Narrows, Cache Valley, Cutler Narrows and on to the Great Salt Lake. A recent study of faults around the Great Salt Lake reveals that extension in volcanic fields produces many small-displacement normal faults that resemble those in the hanging walls of detachment fault.

Regional tectonics, structural geology, tectonics of strike-slip faults, geologic image analysis, Basin and Range extensional processes, Field geology, neotectonics, Hazards analysis, fault analysis, Lake Bonneville, deep-seated gravitational slope deformation (sackung) triggered by earthquakes, and global geophysics.
