The Clyde T. Hardy Memorial Field Camp Scholarship
The Clyde T. Hardy Memorial Field Camp Scholarship was developed to honor the former department head and professor. The scholarship is awarded every other year to an outstanding undergraduate geology major to assist with the expense of attending geology field camp. The recipient must be a declared geology major, must have completed four of the geology field camp prerequisite courses by the end of the spring semester of the academic year in which they are being considered for the scholarship, must intend to take the USU Geology field camp the summer immediately following receipt of the scholarship, and must have an outstanding academic record, as determined by their overall GPA.

Clyde T. Hardy
Clyde Hardy taught geology at Utah State University in Logan, Utah, from 1950 until his retirement in 1986. Clyde became acting department head in 1967 and was named the Head of the Geology Department in 1968 and served in that position until 1982. Clyde retired in 1986, but maintained an office in the department and regularly worked there nearly until his death.
Clyde believed that field geology was an important part of a student’s training and conducted field trips for most of the classes he taught. In addition to asking, “Well, what do you think?” Clyde often exhibited his unique sense of humor on those trips. At one stop to examine an exposure of the Willard thrust, Clyde would stand near a slickensided surface marking the plane of the thrust and deliver his lecture. At the end of his lecture, Clyde bent down, rubbed the slickensides, and pronounced, “Smooth as a baby’s pygidium.”
Although some students were, at first, taken aback by Clyde’s gruff and terse manner, many students developed a genuine friendship with Clyde because they learned that, beneath that imposing exterior, he really did care about people. On numerous occasions, he helped students professionally and personally, even to the point of loaning them money.
Clyde’s great contribution to the knowledge of Utah’s geology is evidenced by his numerous publications and by the number of Master of Science (MS) theses completed under his supervision. Clyde supervised 27 MS theses from 1953 to 1986. Clyde died in Logan Utah in 1998 after a long illness. His mark upon the Department of Geology at Utah State University and its many graduates continues to be felt today.
