LAEP Speaker Series: Eckart Lange, Landscape Representation for Communicating Future Environments

Lecture/Readings

Landscape architects and environmental planners are shaping our shared future. A core competence of landscape architects and environmental planners is spatial thinking and visual communication. We create plans and designs of envisioned changes.

These outcomes of analytical and creative processes are shared among cognate disciplines that represent expertise from the natural and built environment generally, as well as within specialist groups, such as fellow landscape architects and environmental planners.

Often, the wider public is required to be included in this communication process because of compulsory participation in decision-making.

Since hundreds of years, landscape architects and environmental planners have used analogue techniques to communicate such plans and designs. Only since recent decades digital technology has become commonplace and visual representations are now ubiquitous. They have become part of our everyday life.

This presentation will give an overview of how we communicate our plans and designs. Including several case studies, it will highlight the limitations and opportunities in landscape representation for engaging with stakeholders.

LAEP Speaker Series: Sara Zewde, The Aesthetics of Being

Lecture/Readings

In the context of a changing climate, rapid urban development, and clarified social and political tensions, bell hooks' notion of the "aesthetics of being" can offer creative departures for contemporary design practice. Sara Zewde will share her recent design work with Studio Zewde across a range of geographies, through this lens. Bio: Sara Zewde is founding principal of Studio Zewde, a design firm practicing landscape architecture, urbanism, and public art. Named to Time Magazine’s TIME 100 Next, Architectural Digest's AD100, and United States Artists Fellow, her practice is celebrated for its design methods that sync culture, ecology, and craft. In parallel to her design practice, Sara serves as Associate Professor of Practice at Harvard University Graduate School of Design and is currently writing a book on her research retracing Frederick Law Olmsted's journeys through the Slave South. Sara holds a master’s of landscape architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, a master’s of city planning from MIT, and a BA in sociology and statistics from Boston University.

Run the Runway 5K

Fundraiser

For several years, USU Aviation and the Phi Lambda Upsilon chapter of Alpha Eta Rho has hosted the Run the Runway 5K. This race gives runners the unique opportunity of running on one of the runways at the Logan-Cache airport. In addition, this race will provide funding for the Frank de León Comprés Memorial Scholarship awarded to a USU Aviation Student each year. You can also be a 'virtual' runner to donate any amount to the scholarship program and run where ever you are! Our goal is to raise $2,000 and find 12 matching donors so that we can create an endowment for this scholarship.
