Quarterly CONNECTIONS : Balancing Outdoor Lighting for Public Safety & Night Sky Protection

Conference/Seminar

From the Colorado Plateau Dark Sky Cooperative: Balancing Outdoor Lighting for Public Safety & Night Sky Protection

In this session, we will be discussing how to integrate public safety concerns with responsible outdoor lighting design to ensure safer, healthier, and more sustainable communities. Our guest speakers include: Art Hushen, founder of the National Institute of Crime Prevention (NICP, Inc.) and proponent for using Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles to ensure communities enjoy safe, attractive spaces at night. Dr. Bryan Boulanger, the Endowed Chair for the Kokosing Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Ohio Northern University, will provide insights on some innovative tools and a practical approach to creating lightscapes that are compatible with night sky protection.

The Quarterly CONNECTIONS include a series of interactive virtual meetings focused on ways to minimize light pollution and support the preservation and promotion of naturally dark night skies. Registration is free but required in advance for each Quarterly CONNECTIONS session: https://extension.usu.edu/iort/cp-darkskies/quarterly-connections.
