Karen C. Rice

Dr. Karen C. Rice earned her B. S. in Geology at James Madison University in 1982. She
earned her M.S. in Geology at Utah State University in March 1987 and was immediately
hired by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). During
her 36-year career as a Research Hydrologist, she investigated environmental problems
ranging from the effects of acid rain on watershed biogeochemical processes, trace
elements in stream sediments, sea-level rise and salinity intrusion, and effects of climate
change on streams and streamflow. She earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences at
University of Virginia (UVA) in 2001. She held a joint appointment with USGS and as a
Research Faculty member at UVA and forged collaborations with several of the faculty.
